Why Are You Playing AAU Summer Girls Basketball? By Patosha Jeffery
After a basketball game, I asked a team of players what did it mean to them to make it to the state AAU tournament. The players didn't really have an answer. And to be honest, I knew that they would not have an answer because of the way they had just played in the AAU state qualifying game.
I tried to explain to the young ladies that AAU is competitive basketball not recreational. It is not a league were you play uninspired basketball. In AAU, you are playing to be known as the best team in your area, state, and nationally. Then at recruitment age you are fighting to get to the nationals in order to play in front of college coaches. There is nothing wrong with playing recreational or developmental basketball. However if you are playing AAU you should play with a strong desire and with a purpose.
In Memphis, AAU girls basketball is no walk in the park. It is extremely competitive. There are several organizations fighting to be known as the supreme organization of the Mid-South. However as an individual player, you should have that same drive and competitiveness to be number one. AAU teams are normally made up of the best of the best players, especially in Memphis. Memphis AAU teams are stacked with tremendous talent.
So why are you playing AAU summer girls basketball?
1. To display whether you are the best team in your area, state and nationally.
2. To see how you compare against other top talent in your area, state and nationally.
3. To get the opportunity to display your skills to college coaches.
It doesn't matter why you play AAU summer girls basketball. As long as you have a reason you are playing AAU girls summer basketball.
