The Pittsburgh Panthers women's basketball program, popularly known as the Pitt Panthers, is the NCAA Division I intercollegiate women's basketball program of the University of Pittsburgh. The team competes in the Big East Conference and plays their home games in the Petersen Events Center. Contents [hide] 1 History 2 Postseason 3 Honors 3.1 All Americans 3.2 Conference Honors 3.3 Points club 4 WNBA players 5 Season by Season 6 References 7 External links [edit] History The undefeated 1924-25 Pitt women's varsity basketball team went 10-0 with wins against Cincinnati, at NYU, and at Temple who had never before been defeated on their home floor.[1] The Petersen Events Center, home of Pitt women's basketballWomen's intercollegiate varsity basketball at the University of Pittsburgh began during the 1914-1915 [2] season and found early success until 1926-1927 after which it was disbanded in favor of intermural sports programs. Varsity basketball for women was reinstated during the 1970-1971 season. Although participants were awarded varsity letters and competed intercollegiately, the program wasn't taken over by the Athletic Department until the 1974-1975 season. During the '70s, the team posted several conference and NWIT/EAIAW Tournament Appearances. In addition, the Panthers won the Big East regular season championship in 1984 and appeared in several NWIT/WNIT tournaments. In 2007, the Pitt women advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament losing to eventual national champion Tennessee, and in 2008 Pitt advanced to the Sweet Sixteen.[3] [edit] Postseason Trophy case for Pitt women's basketball as seen in the lobby of the Petersen Events Center in 2008NCAA (2): 2007, 2008 Pitt reached the "Sweet Sixteen" in 2007.
