GaGa worked mainly with producers RedOne, Martin Kierszenbaum and Rob Fusari.[6] Unlike many of her pop music peers, Lady GaGa is credited for writing all the lyrics and melodies on record. An accomplished pianist since the age of four, she also performed most of the synth work herself. In regards to the title and concept of the album, Lady GaGa explained, "The Fame is about how anyone can feel famous. Pop culture is art. It doesn't make you cool to hate pop culture, so I embraced it and you hear it all over The Fame. But, it's a sharable fame. I want to invite you all to the party. I want people to feel a part of this lifestyle."[3] In an interview with MTV UK Lady GaGa stated: "I just feel like this record is really different- you’ve got club bangers to more 70s glam to more singer-songwriter records to rock music. What I really love about the UK is that I’m not the first electro-pop artists to come around! The Fame is not about who you are- it’s about how everybody wants to know who you are! Buy it and listen to it before you go out or in the car. I’ve been writing it for 2 and a half years. I wrote half of the album in one week last January. I think you’ve really got to allow artists’ creativity to marinate. It took me a while but really delving into myself I finally got it.I couldn’t be more proud of it. It’s not just a record it’s a whole pop art movement It’s not just about one song."[7] [edit] Music [edit] Musical style Though essentially a pop album, The Fame sees the polymerization of various different genres, including dance-pop, electro-pop, disco, hip-hop and rock music. Lady GaGa draws her influences primarily from late 1970s glam rock musicians such as David Bowie and Queen, retroactively incorporating their ostentatious sound with catchy pop melodies and hooks to create what she has dubbed, "theatrical pop."[2][3] Her sharp lyrical talents, as well as the presence of two guest rappers on her album, have also garnered GaGa a certain amount of recognition from members within the hip-hop community. The synth-beats present throughout the album are also characteristic of synth-pop, most popular from the late 1970s through the mid 1980s. In an interview with Billboard magazine GaGa describes her album: "I marry a lot of different genres, from Def Leppard drums and handclaps to metal drums on urban tracks.... It's very 70's, with early 80's Prince-like guitars and 80's synths. It's a bit retro, a bit glamorous, and you can dance to it. It's very futuristic, very fresh, and very dramatic, sort of like theatrical pop."[8] [edit] Lyrical content Influenced by her experiences growing up around the Lower East Side club scene, The Fame focuses primarily on GaGa's desirous observations on fame and vanity and using keen, self-aware lyrics. Backed by relentless, heavy dance beats, songs such as "Just Dance" and "Beautiful Dirty Rich" unapologetically describe her hedonistic aspirations of living a glamorous lifestyle of wealth, drinking and partying. Tracks like "LoveGame" and "I Like It Rough" provide acute detail of her sexual desires. She also expresses a perchant for softer, love songs on "Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)," a simplistic pop song about breaking up with an old boyfriend and finding someone new, as well as the piano-laden ballad, "Brown Eyes" which she describes as her most vulnerable song.[3] [edit] Reception [edit] Critical The album received generally favorable reviews, with a score of 71 from Metacritic.[9] GaGa was heavily complemented for her songcrafting ability and ear for music. As Billboard states, "Fueled by heavy dance tracks and popping electronic beats, The Fame, the first album by the glamorous Lady Gaga, is a well-crafted sampling of feisty anti-pop in high quality. Already a famous female DJ in her own right, Lady Gaga (nee Stefani Germanotta) pulls out all the stops on The Fame, injecting hard-hitting synthesizers and crashing slicks and
grooves. From its opening track until it closes, The Fame fails to come up short on funky sounds to amuse fans of this dance genre."[10] Many critics found her open, unapologetic views on fame, fortune, sexuality, and partying to be quite entertaining in comparison to more campy pop stars. Entertainment Weekly magazine gave The Fame a B-, saying that "She's on tour with the reunited New Kids on the Block, but Lady GaGa is no squeaky-clean teen singer: This naughty New Yorker got her start on the Lower East Side's sex-soaked club scene, and on her dance-pop debut she offers up barely there metaphors like I wanna take a ride on your disco stick. The Fame is remarkably (and exhaustingly) pure in its vision of a world in which nothing trumps being beautiful, dirty, and rich. In this economy, though, her high-times escapism has its charms".[11] However, certain music reviews critcized the album for the very same reason. Giving The Fame two stars out of five, The Times spoke negatively of the album, saying, "The songs on The Fame fizz about with their europop choruses, autotuned vocals and ditzy, hedonistic lyrics, but they don't feel joyous at all. Instead the likes of "Eh, Eh" and "Boys Boys Boys" are clunky and laboured ("We like boys in cars/ Buy us drinks in bars"). Even the trio of songs that provides the core of the album's celebrity theme ("Paparazzi", "Beautiful Dirty Rich" and the title track) don't ruminate on the addictive inanity of fame, choosing instead to observe passively. The whole exercise seems shallow." [edit] Commercial In the United States, it debuted at #17 on the Billboard 200 with sales of 24,000 before falling down the chart the following week.[12] Its highest peak so far was the third week of January 2009, at #14 with 21,000 units sold.[13] Also in the United States, the album is being a top success on the Top Electronic Albums chart, on which the album debuted and has been in the #1 for twelve consecutive weeks until Billboard issue dated January 31, 2009, when the soundtrack for the movie Slumdog Millionaire displaced it for two weeks, before reclaiming the top spot on the chart.[14] The album made its debut at number six and has so far peaked at number two in New Zealand and has been certified platinum.[15] In Australia after twenty weeks since being released the album peaked at number four,[16] while in Canada it has peaked at number one.[17] In France it debuted and peaked at number 73. "The Fame" made its debut in the United Kingdom at number 3 on the official albums chart on January 18, 2009.[18] In Ireland, the album entered the charts at number eight, and later climbed to number 1, and has currently remained at this position for 2 consecutive weeks.[19] [edit] Promotion To promote the album, Lady GaGa has done several performances worldwide. Her first televised appearance was on Logo's NewNowNext Awards on June 7, 2008. [20] She also performed on So You Think You Can Dance.[21] She then went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on December 2 [22], she was also on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in October 23.[23] She performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on January 8.[24] She was also the opening act for New Kids on the Block: Live tour.[25] She is serving as the opening act for the Pussycat Dolls' World Domination Tour in selected European and Oceanic venues.[26] She performed in Vietnam for the 57th Miss Universe beauty pageant during the swimsuit competition.[27] In Australia, she performed on the talk show Rove on September 28, and Sunrise.[28] In the UK she performed on morning show GMTV, comedy show Sunday Night Project, talk show T4 and performed at G-A-Y in London. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. (April 2008) The ARIA charts are the main Australian music sales charts, issued weekly by the Australian Recording Industry Association. The charts are a record of the highest selling singles and albums in various genres in Australia. ARIA commenced compiling its own charts in-house from the week ending 26 June 1988. Prior to this, from mid-1983, ARIA had licensed the 'Kent Music Report' (which was later renamed as the 'Australian Music Report', until it ceased to be published in 1999). The ARIA charts include: Weekly Top 100 highest selling music singles Weekly Top 100 highest selling music albums Weekly Top 40 highest selling music DVDs Weekly Top 50 highest selling physical singles Weekly Top 50 highest selling physical albums Weekly Top 40 highest selling digital tracks Weekly Top 40 highest selling "urban" releases Weekly Top 20 highest selling dance releases Weekly Top 20 highest selling country releases Weekly Top 50 highest DJ spins by registered DJs Yearly Top 100 End of Year charts profiling the year in music The Weekly Top 50 highest selling music singles chart is broadcast on the Nova radio network on Sunday afternoons from 3:00pm to 6:00pm. All charts are then published on the ARIA Chart website each Sunday night at 6:30pm, in order for printed release the next day. Each chart is dated according to the Monday of the given week. The website and printed lists are shortened versions of the full chart, with only the top 50 singles and albums shown as well as only the top 40 digital tracks. Both the Top 40 Digital Track Chart and the Top 100 Singles Chart include data from online retailers including iTunes and BigPond music. As of 8 October 2006, the official ARIA singles chart included online data as well as physical sales, and is now considered the "official" singles chart for the official radio countdown on NOVA. In 2006, it was announced that the Brazin retailing group, comprising major retailers HMV, Sanity and Virgin music/DVD stores would no longer contribute sales data to the ARIA charts.[1][2] However, after a five month absence, Brazin reportedly re-commenced contributing sales figures to the ARIA Charts on 26 November 2006.[3] [edit] ARIA Awards There are numerous awards and events for Australian chart topping artist and groups that include: The ARIA No.1 Chart Awards have been an event on the Australian music industry's calendar for the past 3 years. The Awards were established in 2002 as a means of acknowledging Australian recording artists, and their record labels, who attained the coveted No.1 position on the ARIA album and singles chart The ARIA Music Awards recognise excellence and innovation in all genres of Australian music. The very first ARIA Awards took place at Sydney's Sheraton Wentworth Hotel in front of 500 industry guests, on the 2 March 1987. Nineteen years later, the ARIAs are held in front of 2,500 industry guests, 5,000 members of the general public, and are watched by almost 2 million people via Network Ten's broadcast. the awards are broadcast nationally on commercial TV and relayed via PAY TV to international audiences. "The ARIAs have always been, first and foremost, a showcase for local artists across a broad range of genres, produced by ARIA record company members. They are the highlight of the Australian music industry's calendar, covering a diverse range of talent over 28 categories". Denis Handlin, Chairman of ARIA. The ARIA Hall of Fame has been an important part of the ARIA Awards since 1988. Traditionally taking place during the ARIA Awards ceremony, a diverse range of artists have been inducted into the Hall of Fame including AC/DC, Dame Joan Sutherland, Olivia Newton-John, Johnny O'Keefe, Paul Kelly, John Farnham, INXS, Slim Dusty, Jimmy Little, Nick Cave, Midnight Oil and more. In July 2005, ARIA staged the inaugural ARIA Icons: Hall of Fame event, which was introduced to honour the growing number of legendary performers, producers, songwriters and others who have had an impact on music culture in Australia. In the past, time constraints had prevented any more than one or two artists from being inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame at each ARIA Awards, resulting in a lengthy waiting list of worthy recipients. While ARIA intends to maintain a Hall of Fame segment within the ARIA Awards presentation, the ARIA Icons: Hall of Fame will become an annual stand-alone event that continues to honour those whose musical achievements have had A significant impact in Australia and around the world. [edit] ARIA certifications A music single or album qualifies for a platinum certification if it exceeds 70,000 copies shipped to retailers and a gold certification for 35,000 copies shipped. The amount of trade sales to earn a Gold or Platinum accreditation was reduced to these amounts in 1989 after previously being 100,000 copies for platinum and 50,000 copies for gold. Originally applied to LP records, this ARIA certification is now most commonly awarded for compact disc sales and legal digital downloads. For music DVDs (formerly videos), a Gold accreditation originally represented 7,500 copies shipped, with a Platinum accreditation representing 15,000 units shipped. In 2008, however, this was amended to create consistency amongst all accreditation. A Platinum and Gold accreditation are now the same as that appointed to compact discs/digital downloads: 70,000 and 35,000 respectively.
